Recommended Reading List

Although there are many good books available about martial arts, we have found these three books to be some of the most useful and insightful.  These selections will add to your martial arts understanding and training.  We recommend that all aikidoka read each one of these books.

Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere

-A. Westbrook and O. Ratti

One of the most comprehensive books ever written on Aikido.  Includes combat, defense theory, and neutralization techniques.

The Spirit of Aikido

-K. Ueshiba

Instead of just detailing techniques, this book revels the essence of Aikido – the philosophy of unifying mind, body, and ki through Aikido and character development.

Zen in the Martial Arts

-J. Hyams

Composed of insightful anecdotes relating the author’s experience with world famous masters such as:  Bruce Lee, Ed Parker, Jim Lau, and Gichin Funakoshi.  This book gives great insight into the proper martial art mind set and attitude.
