WHAT IS JUJITSU

Jujitsu’s main appeal will turn heads to the fanatics of mixed martial artists (MMA). Present day, it is popularized in UFC, PRIDE, Bushido, and other entertainment shows now on the market. Jujitsu, a Japanese combat art (non-sport), is a well-rounded art, an extension to other arts such as Judo, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, and even Boxing. While its main focus is ground fighting or grappling, it also calls for learning stand-up where punching, kicking, and throwing are involved.

Ju means “suppleness” and jitsu stands for “technique, art”. Many mistake the translation of jujitsu as being a “gentle art” instead of defining it as “the art of suppleness or flexibility”. It simply means that jujitsu does not attempt to put strength against strength, but technique and energy against the aggressor.

Through Jujitsu, we are able to learn and familiarize ourselves with the seven virtues or tenets of Bushido (“the way of the warrior”).

Gi – The right decision

Yu – Bravery

Jin – Universal love, Compassion, Benevolence

Rei – Right action, Courtesy

Makoto – Sincerity, Truthfulness

Meiyo – Honour

Chugi – Devotion, Loyalty

Learning arm bars, knee bars, and take-downs are great but it should not become the only thing the student, or Jujitsuka (a student of Jujitsu), learns. The virtues may seem mystical, but making the right decision could be simple as choosing to tap out instead of breaking your partner’s arms or even your own, bravery could be a smaller man or woman coming against a larger opponent and still choose to roll with him/her, loyalty could be even simpler: attend class sessions and answer Sensei with a mere “Hai” (literally meaning “yes”) and the list goes on.

LEARN TO FLOW. When you are faced with a life-threatening self-defense situation, if not prepared, you will be paralyzed by fear. Fear is nothing; consistent training to prepared for that great battle for life will eventually come to us all. Jujitsu and all of Budo has character training as its major purpose, because of all the character traits you develop through continual practice are the armor that you will put on to face the battles of life. It is through training that we avoid confrontations.
